I should say this isn’t meant to talk down to Blue Jays fans or devalue what Bautista accomplished for greater Toronto and batflip-kind. He has quite probably been the man to turn baseball around in Toronto, and not just with one well-timed homer, but with his own career renaissance.

On this cold, dreary Jan. 1, 2016 reading this article brought out the 2004 ALCS set and the warmth returned. Discs for Games 1-2-3 have never had the cellophane removed but 4 thru 7 are well worn. It is the first day of the final year of David Ortiz's career and, even though the season does not begin for 3 months, I have been thinking about how I will feel as I watch each of Big Papi's AB's this season. There will be joy, and great memories, that is for certain, but, equally certain, there will be the realization that this great, incredible era for Red Sox Nation is coming to an end. There has never been anything like it before and, even if the team wins 10 WS in a row, there will never be anything like 2004 through 2016 again.
