Gordon's offense may be an improvement over a fully developed and adjusted Rusney or JBJ, but likely not in 2017-18; and possibly not in 2016. The defense could possibly be a wash as soon as 2016. Will his very expensive last contract, probably for 4-5 years (perhaps more than the combined ontracts of Betts, Bradley, Brusney (and Beni & Margot over that period) produce more value? I don't know, but it is tricky.

IMO a rock solid 4th OF is a sound strategy. Gordon is much too good for that, at least at age 32-33, and is gonna get paid alot more than rock solid choices for that role like deAza, Pearce, Young, et al. Pitchin, pitching, pitching and corner IF. Pearce also plays 1B btw.

I really like the outfield, and the defense that they provide. Betts, Castillo, and Bradley Jr have come into there own, played well together, and are definitely one of the best defensive groups in the AL.I agree the sample size is a small one, but with all the mediocracy in baseball, and the huge upside of the current outfield, I can live with these three and Holt backing them up!

Red Sox build the bullpen. Fast food mentality is not needed. Outfield is fine - leave it alone. If not, you have studs down the farm. See if Zimmerman wants a ring. Use the farm to add to bull Pen what you can not buy. Starting rotation did fine once the outfield disaster was corrected. Rushing to the playoffs is what got the sox in this predicament in the first place.

3/36 for Gordon is crazypants. Two years ago Pence got 5/90 and Choo 7/130. Five years ago Werth got 7/126. Six years ago Holliday got 7/120. It would be shocking if Gordon signed for less than $100M. While whatever luddite GM Cafardo has as a source might not see his value, there are enough teams run by smart people these days that the man is gonna get paid.

I like the idea of signing Gordon, who has exceptional career numbers at Fenway. The Sox also could use a quality lefty bat, and he certainly fits. But signing Gordon to a long-term deal likely means they'd trade Castillo or Bradley. Not crazy about that idea.
