Great points! I’ve been a huge fan of keeping Holt in the super-utility role in recent years. But he just doesn’t complement the starting 9 as well this year as he has in past seasons. Young and Rutledge are probably first off the bench this year. And Hernandez can fill half of Holt’s role this year. I’m sad to say that it’s probably time to see what kind of a return Holt could bring in a trade.

And add to the Hernandez vs Holt question the Rule 5 selection of Josh Rutledge which means that Holt will have to earn his playing time next season.

But, as Cowett points out, the those in the starting nine who might potentially be platooned, at least to a degree, are also LH (Benintendi; Sandoval; JBJ) IMHO none of those three get platooned to begin with, and the Sox have Young as their fourth OF and Hernandez as their potential IF jackknife. I’d be surprised to see Holt traded. He has far more value to the Red Sox as a backup than he’d return in a deal. A.L. benches are very short, and there are very few players who can play both CF and SS.
