This blows my mind every time I bring it up. From 1941-1949 and 1954-1957, span of 10 years, Williams played 1,374 games and had 6,001 plate appearances. He got on-base 3,004 times, .501 OBP. Over the span of an entire decade he got on-base every other at-bat!

The second longest streak belongs to--appropriately enough--Joe DiMaggio. When you factor in his streak after the streak, he reached base in 74 consecutive games in 1941.

The NL record holder is George Van Haltren with Pittsburgh who reached base in 60 straight in 1893.

And the closest anyone has come since 1949 is Orlando Cabrera who reached base in 63 straight in 2006. I do not have the faintest idea how that could have happened.

I appreciate and enjoyed this article, but I differ on the conclusion. Getting a hit being substantially more difficult than reaching base safely, I can't so readily buy that 56 games hitting are topped by 84 games on base (with both ranking as tremendous achievements). While comparing the two is something like arguing about one's favorite ice cream, I'd note that DiMaggio did draw a walk in game 57, so his on base streak ran for 74 games. Also note that Joe D., robbed on at least one smash in game 57 to Ken Keltner to break the hit streak, proceeded to hit safely in 16 straight starting the next day, to hit safely in 73 out of 74!

He struck out 5 times in the 56 games.

And, while Williams was a known butcher in the field, Joe D. played his glorious version of center, as the complete ballplayer of the era.

"Ted Williams was the greatest hitter I ever saw, but DiMaggio was the greatest all around player." -Bob Feller

You asked ... DiMaggio walked 21 times over those 56 games, three intentional. Williams had more walks in just the hitless games of the streak than DiMaggio had in his whole streak. Different guys.

BTW, it is an interesting appendage to the article that Williams, who holds the major league record for consecutive games reaching base, also holds the major league record for consecutive at-bats reaching base at 16.

Great article about Teddy Ballgame, but what about accounting for BB for Joltin Joe during his 56 game hitting streak. Might help strengthen your argument even more.
Thx
