The line, ‘They don’t know how tough it is’, applied to Eck is beyond ludicrous. As if a Cy Young, World Series, Hall of Famer doesn’t know baseball is hard, especially a guy like Eck who very nearly washed out of the league before reinventing himself.
Eck is one of the better announcers I’ve heard, as well as being quite self-deprecating. It’s not like he’s up there every game hammering away at Price’s disappointing Red Sox career. Eck is doing his job in a way that benefits his audience, too bad if Price would rather have some homer reflexively blowing sunshine up his backside.
I’ve read attempts to justify Price’s comments as appropriate because baseball is harder for players who don’t have Eckersley’s talent. Even if that’s the case, a guy who has been a premier pitcher in the league for a decade isn’t the one to be making it.
