Shane A., I agree that we've seen some good starts from Price. However, the final issue raised in the article is the contract. Price is declining, perhaps steadily in spite of the occasional good effort, and the Sox are facing 4 more years of this at 30+MM per year. That is quite a burden for the club to shoulder for a spotty pitcher on his way down whose arm could still separate in the middle. The 90+MM due him after 2018 could go a long way toward fixing this club w/o much loss at the front of the rotation.

I am left to wonder why. Why is he not throwing the breaking balls as often as he did previously, let alone as often as an aging elite pitcher would? Is it the elbow? The one that apparently is unique to David and can heal on its own?
Flummoxed, I am.

I like DP24. He had 2 unusual outings vs NYY and 1 poor outing vs Texas. Other than those DP has been pretty good. If I was going to be concerned regarding a member of the rotation I will stick with Drew. David Price is a fearless competitor and I will never hate someone who wants to pitch every inning of every game while winning every outing. David is worth cheering and those of you who chose not too are not great Sox fans. Betts, Benny JDM Sale do not need our support. David does.

I have been an early adopter of the "Hate This Contract" stance, so I don't have to wait for my own clarity to develop. I say help him leave Boston by assigning him to the bullpen now and for the ROS to do two-inning super relief stints while splitting his starts between Wright and B. Johnson (although I'd rather see Velasquez over either). Pride and anger will ensure that Price departs via opt-out. Of course, DD is probably still in his corner, so I don't imagine the bullpen move would sit well with him, but it's a possibly persuasive exit strategy for club and player alike.
